There are three Geology units available at SCQF Level 5 covering Rocks & Minerals, Earth Physics & Earth Movements and History of the Earth.
Gairloch is one of the only schools in Scotland to be delivering these units. Some of our geology pupils have gone on to study Geography and Geology at universities including St Andrews, Glasgow and Edinburgh whilst others are working locally in rural careers. We run the course on a year-on/year-off basis with the next delivery in 2025-2026.
Gairloch is an amazing place to learn Geology, surrounded by some of the oldest rocks in Europe, early evidence of life on land and with mineral exploration happening just a couple of miles from the school.
The Rocks & Minerals course booklet takes pupils through the following at SCQF Level 5:
Minerals and their identification
Igneous rocks - formation, identification, extrusive & intrusive rocks
Sedimentary rocks - formation, identification, sedimentary structures
Metamorphic rocks - formation and identification of rocks formed by regional, contact & dynamic metamorphism
Rocks in the field - an introduction to working out the geological history of an area
The unit includes practical activities utilising hand specimens of minerals and rocks.
The unit is assessed using a end-of-unit assessment which is found on the SQA secure website.
The Earth Physics & Earth Movements course booklet takes pupils through the following at SCQF Level 5:
Earthquakes
Geophysics
Structural Geology
Plates & tectonics
The unit includes lots of problem solving activities and numeracy. It also includes using block models and basic geological maps to determine more complex geological puzzles.
The unit is assessed using a end-of-unit assessment which is found on the SQA secure website and a field report (400 words) based on observing and making basic interpretations about geology in the field.
The History of the Earth course booklet takes pupils through the following at SCQF Level 5:
Methods of studying the history of the Earth
Fossils - the morphology of a range of fossils and how they lived
Evolution
Stratigraphy
The unit includes brings together the content of the three units and uses hand specimens of known and unknown fossils throughout.
The unit is assessed using a end-of-unit assessment which is found on the SQA secure website and a field report (400 words) based on observing and making basic interpretations about geology in the field.
