Geographical Study
Geographical Study
Your Geographical Study should be starting to come together, with your background knowledge, planning and evaluation already done.
Now it's time to work on your results, data presentation and analysis - that is providing you've done your data gathering!
As you work through your data you will want to:
Write up results in tables or other appropriate formats
Present your results using maps, diagrams, graphs or charts. Aim to use a wide range of these; if you have a choice to repeat a technique or do a different one always choose to showcase more examples.
Analyse your results using descriptive or inferential statistics. Again, try to use a variety rather than repeating techniques.
Discuss how your results relate to each other, your hypothesis and any geographical models you've considered.
You can refer to the Mark Sheet to see how the SQA marks these sections of the Geographical Study.
Your work on the results and analysis sections is scheduled for this week and next week. In most cases this will take a significant chunk of time and so it will continue in the background until the deadline for this section in week 30 (start of March).
You might want to look at these examples, which score highly for data presentation and analysis. You should note the variety of ways that they present data - both in this "section" of their report but also throughout (e.g. maps in the introduction, diagrams in the conclusion).

Your next step for your Geographical Issues essay is to complete a proposal, similarly to what you did when starting your Geographical Study.
For this week you should complete it but with:
brief notes/ideas for the background knowledge section
wider reading examples, but you might not have picked out your three main sources
You'll be able to focus in on your main sources and the background knowledge next week, after we've discussed the proposal in your tutorial.

Map Interpretation
This week's tutorial will focus continue our focus on Question 1 in the Advanced Higher Exam. This includes map interpretation and, similarly to the Geographical Skills question in the Higher course, the best way to prepare for it is to look at and complete as many examples as possible.
This week we'll focus on questions about factors affecting land use. You'll make good use of your atlas when answering these questions.
We'll work on one together in class (2024 Q1e - influence of physical geography) and then you'll work on one in your own time (2022 Q1d - factors influencing farming).
