This week's source will help you examine a publication titled "Soil; the hidden part of the climate cycle".
It has some excellent examples of data and information which has been presented in different graphical forms. As you're reading it, pay attention to not only what the information is but how it's been communicated.
This will link to the work you're doing on the knowledge and understanding part of your Geographical Study.
You might find it more tricky, this week, to critically examine the author of this report. That's because it has what's known as a corporate author. Consider whether this acts as an advantage or a disadvantage of the publication.
This week we're going to focus on your own Geographical Study. You should have settled on a topic, got some hypothesis and come up with a plan for collecting information.
One of the things you need to demonstrate in your written report is a detailed knowledge and understanding of the topic being studied. This should include wider reading, beyond and around what you have covered in class.
For example, if you have a project on soils, you could show an understanding of wider soil profiles; more about how they form; more about what influences pH of a soil or more about the implications of different soil textures.
You can see more about how the SQA allocate the 8 marks for this section on page 4 of the Marks Sheet, which is linked.
For this week, you should do some reading and research around your main theme. Write what you find in a document or on paper. Include diagrams, graphs, statistics where relevant. Focus on what is relevant to your study. For just now, keep a note of the different sources you use.
Next week you'll write this up properly, including referencing.
